Students at workThanks to the wonderful support that we receive from the P and C for Support Teacher Learning Assistance, we are able to offer 17 maths groups across Years 3-6 despite having 14 primary home classes. This enables us to keep group sizes small, particularly for our support groups.

Our research shows that we are a high performing school in Numeracy assessments such as NAPLAN. In order to cater for our high achievers and for our students requiring extra support, we are continuing our successful system of using two textbooks. Both books are written by Harry O'Brien and dovetail well. All groups in the grade cover the same concepts from the curriculum but the examples and number of examples are matched to the ability level of the group.

It must be remembered that the textbook is only one of many tools that teachers use to teach Mathematics. Others include Interactive Whiteboard activities, hands-on materials (jugs, rulers, scales, 2D shapes, 3D objects, trundle wheels, base 10 blocks, counters etc), posters and worksheets. At times, some pages in the textbook may not be completed as the teacher preferred to use a different teaching strategy to teach that concept or skill. A hand may be drawn across that page to indicate this or the page may be left blank.

Each child is also offered a Mathletics user account. This popular interactive learning systems features full curriculum content for years K - 6 with interactive learning modules, fun games and the extremely popular live competition where students compete against each other in real time. Students may access Mathletics from home using their username and password.

Each child will be billed for only one maths group textbook this year. Should your child change maths groups, he or she will be provided with the appropriate textbook. We are looking forward to some engaging times in maths and trust that all students will have maths lessons that will cater for their needs.
