Gifted and Talented education

Gifted and talented education image

Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical. Our gifted and talented program provides these students with learning opportunities on top of the normal curriculum. Lindfield East Public School adopts Gagné's (2003) Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT), endorsed by the Department of Education and Communities because it is internationally recognised for its strong research base and accessibility.

How are Gifted and Talented students catered for?

In the Classroom:

Classes at Lindfield East Public School are not streamed. Students identified as gifted will be closely monitored by the Gifted and Talented Committee during their time at Lindfield East to ensure provisions, adjustments and accommodations are in place to assist in their gifts manifesting into talent. Class groupings take this into account and attempt to cluster like-minded peers to ensure targeted students can work together with a differentiated, enriched program.

In 2015, after consultation with school staff, current academic research on best practice in catering for gifted and talented students and our academic partner Dr Jill Forster, Lindfield East Public School has formed a Stage 3 composite class of high-ability students. The selection process for the class involved multiple criteria, and was undertaken by a committee comprising of Executive staff, the school counsellor, members of the Gifted and Talented committee, and class teachers. The creation of this class has allowed these students to receive the best possible learning activities to meet their needs. The class is taught by a teacher trained in Gifted and Talented Education. It is open to all students currently enrolled at the school.

Teachers are continually trained in curriculum differentiation and many have undertaken professional learning and development in Gifted and Talented Education to provide an appropriately-differentiated program for each child's needs across Key Learning Areas.

Beyond the Classroom:

Outside of the classroom, Lindfield East Public School is able to provide a diverse program of enrichment opportunities including the Creative Arts (Band, Choral and Dance Groups), Leadership (Student Representative Council Representatives, Green Team, Library Monitors), English (Public Speaking and Debating, Spelling and Writing Competitions, The Lyrebird Chronicles Writers' Group), Sport (Representation in Zone right up to National Carnivals, PSSA Opportunities and Regional Sporting Teams) and Mathematics (Ability-based Maths Groups, Maths Olympiad, Code Club in Year 5).

We also offer enrichment programs in a range of Key Learning Areas through our Killara Schools Partnership program.

Externally administered ICAS tests are offered to students throughout the year.
