Solar energy

Solar Energy Panels Installed

LEPS was included in Round 1 of the National Solar Schools program. In October 2009 the Federal Government installed a $55,000 5kW solar PV system to support our school electricity consumption providing up to 3 classrooms with their daily power requirements.

The inclusion of networked WEBGraph technology allows teachers and students to monitor and analyse supply and consumption of power via the computer network linkage with the solar panels.

Classes used technology to find out how much power the school is using and compare our daily power usage. Students made the following recommendations as methods to reduce our power consumption:

  • Compare daily power usage
  • Compare how much we use against another school
  • Report on daily usage & generation in the Lyrebird
  • Suggest a day to turn things off
  • Inform the school why we are turning things off
  • Suggest things to do to reduce our usage
  • Turn off air con when classroom is not in use
  • Turn off monitors
  • Turn off appliances where possible at the power point
  • Put smartboards on no show when not in use
  • Turn off lights where appropriate
