Eco education

Eco-gardenAfter 3 years, our Eco-garden has now well and truly established itself as an integral part of school culture at LEPS. It's fast grown from a small vegetable patch to a highly acclaimed and multi-faceted outdoor education area. The leadership of Michelle Marquet (Science Teacher) and our General Assistant (Denis Mitchell) has ensured the environmental education area has continued to increase involvement from students, staff and parents.

In 2013 the garden's reputation reached our local newspaper, 'The North Shore Times', highlighting the level of community participation and the addition of a Chinese vegetable patch being tended by a LEPS grandfather. With seating planned for our outdoor classroom and the installation of a weather station, our Eco-garden is constantly improving.

Expert eco-gardeners, Peter and Allison Rutherford from Kimbriki Eco House kindly imparted their extensive environmental knowledge to our students and staff when they visited recently. Their infectious passion for sustainable living and their extensive understanding of composting systems will be utilised in a mentoring capacity, as the school develops our Eco Garden.

Our student 'Green Team' received first hand training in composting techniques and collaboratively built a no-dig garden.

Peter also presented his message to all students and teachers at assemblies and explained the important role we all have in showing 'Care and Respect' for the environment.

Keep an eye on our eco-garden as it progresses in the future.
