Tree in history

Stone Memorial Area Constructed at LEPS

The large Camphor Laurel tree that stood over the intants silver seats area for many years, providing shade for decades of students was removed in August 2010. Unfortunately, over recent years it became responsible for a large proportion of playground accidents. It caused extensive root damage around and under the silver seats and was identified as an OH&S hazard by the DET. Despite regular lopping of limbs and maintenance to the playground the potential risk to students became significant.

There is no doubt that this prominent tree has special memories for many students, staff and parents of LEPS. Its trunk and foliage have provided the shelter for many games, lunches and conversations.

When in February 2009 the Federal Government announced the 'Building The Education Revolution' (BER) program, an opportunity arose to have a safe and sheltered covered outdoor learning area (COLA) built at no expense to the community and at the same time address the safety concerns by removing the tree.

Local artist and stone mason, Art, has skilfully created a custom designed memorial area around the new COLA flagpole over the October 2010 holiday period. The stone wall was cleverly designed to incorporate a cross section of the tree which now stands as a reminder to this historical part of our school.

The memorial area will become a focal point for future ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services.
