As part of the 2014 NAIDOC week program, Menindee Central School students visited both Killara High School and LEPS this week. At the request of KHS Head Teacher, David Browne, Tarsha W and Andrew S (Year 10) flew into Sydney to address 500 students on indigenous culture before turning their hand to bricklaying at LEPS.
One of the highlights of our student visits to Menindee over the past 4 years has been the cooking of traditional ‘Johnny Cakes'. These delicious treats are similar to damper and cooked over hot coals on a specially made brick pit. In Paakantyi language, they are known as ‘Nikki Munnu' and Indigenous Elders have taught many of our students the cooking procedure.
Former LEPS parent Mr Michael De Zwart kindly provided his building expertise yesterday and coordinated the symbolic and collaborative construction of our ‘Johnny Cake' pit in the LEPS BBQ area. Year 6 students along with Menindee teacher Mr Adam Bailey all learnt the finer points of using trowels and mixing ‘mud'. The final result looks amazing and the pit will be utilised on numerous occasions throughout the year.
