We are nearing the end of our first term of Code Club @ LEPS (www.codeclubau.org), where selected Year 5 students have been learning the basics of computer programming, via the Scratch environment.
Through fun and interesting projects, the students have been learning how to program computers to create real apps. Core projects this term have included:-
Herbert & Felix (Cat chasing mouse)
Ghostbusters (Whack-a-mole)
Fireworks
Fruit Machine
Fish Chomp
Desert Race
It has been quite stunning to see the creativity, enthusiasm and progress of each student. Concepts the students have learned have included; angular direction of movement, random numbers, global/local variables, Cartesian coordinate systems, Boolean Logic and of course debugging strategies.
A showcase of student projects is located online at http://scratch.mit.edu/studios/457195/. You can play the apps and look inside to see the code that students have created.
