In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Lindfield East Public School holds a strong association with China and provides opportunities for all students to engage with Chinese culture. The Language Other Than English (LOTE) program offers non-Mandarin speaking children the opportunity to learn a language and immerse themselves in a foreign culture.
The LOTE program runs simultaneously with the Community language program, allowing for a maximum continuity of learning.
Students engage in Mandarin through a range of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and role-play activities. They participate in 45-minute lessons led by a specialist teacher once a week.
Each term, we focus on a different topic in each grade to create a diverse learning environment, and every semester we work towards a final project (such as independent assignments and group presentations).
Cultural knowledge is integrated within the program consistently via songs, stories, celebrations and quizzes, which enhance the learning experiences for student K-6.
Community Language Program - Mandarin
Mandarin is a Commonwealth funded community language program catering for Chinese background speakers from Kindergarten to Year 6. Ms Yi Qing Zeng is the specialist teacher who plans programs and teaches students to acquire, develop and maintain language skills in Mandarin. The Mandarin teacher also acts as a community liaison within our school.
